Low Carb Meals or Low Fat Meals

Low Carb Meals or Low Fat Meals

This has been the tug of war question among dieters since the beginning of time. Does one lose more weight if eating low carb meals or will more weight be shed if one consumes low fat meals?

According to recent research in the end, you will lose about the same amount by following either one. But, which one is healthier?

Diets such as South Beach and Atkins, which tout the benefits of low carb meals, will typically call for consuming more fat and protein. Adherence to these diets results in more weight loss over the short term. At the conclusion of a year, however, those who follow these diets experience a similar rate of regaining weight than people who follow other kinds of weight loss plans.

It is a common belief that if one is consuming a diet that is high in fat and low in carbohydrate they are more likely to show spikes in their levels of cholesterol. This is not necessarily true but for long term weight loss, physicians do not recommend these diets.

When one consumes a diet that is low in fat, they consume foods that are low on the glycemic index such as an abundance of fruits and vegetables. Foods that are low glycemic will not result in spikes to blood sugar as high glycemic foods do. When people eat these foods they can eat more without gaining weight which results in decreased feelings of hunger.

The most beneficial way to lose weight is to cut out processed foods and foods that are high in sugar content. Sticking to fresh foods and cooking more at home so that you are aware of the ingredients contained in your meals, will ensure that you are not eating too much fat or too much carbohydrate. There should be a balance in your diet.

Exercise is also a vital part of healthy weight loss and should be incorporated into any diet plan. While you may lose the same amount of weight whether you chose to consume low carb meals or low fat meals, the most important consideration is the food choices you make. Freshly prepared and organic is more beneficial than packaged foods. These are the foods that will provide the most in the way of vital minerals and vitamins.

It is also important to stay hydrated and be sure that you are drinking enough water. Try to consume at least half of your body weight of water in ounces each day. During hot summer months or after heavy exercise where you sweat, drink even more.

By making smart diet choices, exercising and staying hydrated, you can manage your weight and stay healthy in the process.
